What Is marula oil, and where does it come from?
Marula oil is cold-pressed from the soft white kernels inside the hard nut of the marula fruit. The Sclerocarya birrea tree is indigenous to southern Africa, found naturally across the woodlands and savannah belt of regions including Limpopo, Namibia, Botswana, and Zimbabwe (Maposa et al., 2026). The tree, known in Zulu as umganu, is one of the continent’s most valued botanical resources — its fruit eaten, its bark used medicinally, and its oil applied to skin and hair as part of daily care (Mokgolodi et al., 2011).
Traditional harvesters have long valued the tree for food, medicine, and skincare. The oil itself has been applied for centuries to protect skin and hair against harsh sun, dry winds, and environmental stress (Naidoo et al., 2018). Long before modern dermatology had a vocabulary for barrier function or transepidermal water loss, communities across southern Africa had already mapped marula oil’s skin-softening and protective properties through generations of careful, empirical use.
Today, marula oil is one of the most rigorously studied African botanicals in the cosmetic sciences — and one of the most misunderstood. It is not a trend ingredient. It is a precise, functional oil with a well-characterised chemistry and peer-reviewed clinical evidence supporting its use in formulation.
The chemistry
Now let’s get technical. Marula oil’s composition is dominated by oleic acid, which typically comprises 69–78% of the total fatty acid content (Bvenura & Kambizi, 2024; Komane et al., 2015). The remaining profile includes palmitic acid at approximately 15%, linoleic acid at 8–9%, and smaller quantities of stearic acid and other minor fatty acids (Bvenura & Kambizi, 2024). It also contains natural antioxidants — vitamin E (tocopherol), vitamin C precursors, and polyphenols.
This fatty acid profile closely resembles the lipids naturally present in human skin, which contributes to marula oil’s excellent compatibility and absorption. The oil is also notably stable: it is up to ten times more resistant to oxidation than olive oil, making it a reliable, high-quality ingredient in luxury formulations designed to perform consistently over time (Komane et al., 2015; Schripsema et al., 2023).
Evidence-based benefits for skin
Clinical and in vitro research highlights several reliable effects.
Hydration and moisture retention
The most cited clinical study on marula oil’s skin efficacy was published in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology in 2015. Researchers recruited 20 healthy adult female volunteers and assessed the oil’s irritancy potential, moisturising effects, hydrating properties, and occlusivity using validated dermatological instrumentation: a Corneometer®, an Aquaflux®, and a Chromameter® (Komane et al., 2015).
The findings were unambiguous:

The study concluded that marula oil, rich in fatty acids, demonstrates moisturising, hydrating, and occlusive properties, and that its inclusion in cosmetic formulations is justified based on both traditional use and clinical evidence (Komane et al., 2015).
Barrier support
The fatty acids in marula oil help reinforce the skin’s natural lipid layer — the stratum corneum — supporting softness and suppleness, particularly on dry or environmentally stressed skin (Komane et al., 2015; PubMed, 2026). Because its fatty acid profile is structurally similar to the skin’s own lipids, it integrates into the barrier rather than sitting on top of it, which is what gives it the biomimetic quality that distinguishes it from less considered oils.
More recently, researchers have explored marula oil-derived ceramide nanoparticles as a targeted delivery format for repairing compromised skin barriers. A 28-day clinical trial found that topical application of a cream containing these ceramide nanoparticles significantly reduced transepidermal water loss and erythema while increasing skin thickness and density, with superior anti-inflammatory activity compared to conventional ceramide treatments (PubMed, 2026).
Lightweight absorption without greasiness
Unlike heavier carrier oils, marula penetrates quickly, leaving skin nourished rather than coated. This makes it suitable for daily use on the face across skin types — including those who prefer a refined, non-heavy texture. Antioxidant protection and comfort
Marula oil’s polyphenols and tocopherols help defend skin against environmental stressors and oxidative damage (Naidoo et al., 2018). In vitro research has also demonstrated that marula plant extracts inhibit collagenase and elastase — the enzymes responsible for degrading collagen and elastin — with marula stem extracts showing collagenase inhibition of up to 99% and elastase inhibition of up to 93% in laboratory conditions (Naidoo et al., 2018).
