The oil of the "miracle tree". One of the few plant oils with human clinical data behind its use, and a botanical woven through African life for millennia. What is moringa oil, and where does it come from?

Moringa oil is cold-pressed from the seeds, sometimes called the kernels, of Moringa oleifera, a slender, drought-resistant tree that can grow several metres in a single year. Though the species originates in the sub-Himalayan foothills of northwest India, it now grows throughout the tropics and subtropics, and has been cultivated for generations across Africa, the Arabian Peninsula, Southeast Asia, South America and the Caribbean (Ojo & Kappo, 2023; Cerbaro et al., 2023).

Almost every part of the tree is used: the leaves as a dense nutritional food, the pods and roots in traditional medicine, and the seed oil in cooking, in lamps, and on skin and hair. That last use gave the oil its historical name — ben oil, or behen oil — a reference to its unusually high level of behenic acid, a long-chain fatty acid rare in common plant oils (VitaLibrary, 2025). The tree's reputation as the "miracle tree" reflects centuries of practical reliance on it across some of the harshest growing climates on earth.

Long before laboratory instruments could quantify hydration or trans-epidermal water loss, communities living alongside the moringa tree had already learned what its oil did for skin exposed to heat, sun and dry wind. Today, that traditional knowledge is increasingly matched by peer-reviewed evidence.

The chemistry

Time to get technical. Moringa seed oil is a high-oleic oil, structurally not unlike extra-virgin olive oil in broad outline but with a distinctive fatty acid signature. Oleic acid typically makes up around 70–78% of the total fatty acid content (Chin et al., 2020; Fernandes et al., 2024). The remainder includes behenic acid at roughly 4–7%, palmitic acid at around 6–8%, stearic acid at approximately 5%, and smaller quantities of arachidic and linolenic acids (Chin et al., 2020; Fernandes et al., 2024).

Behenic acid is the fatty acid that sets moringa apart. Rare among cosmetic oils, it contributes slip, a satin finish and a creamy texture, and it is widely used in cosmetics as a conditioning agent and emollient (VitaLibrary, 2025; Salih & Yahia, 2025). Alongside the fatty acids, moringa oil carries a meaningful payload of natural antioxidants and skin-conditioning compounds: analysis has identified roughly 15 mg of α-tocopherol (vitamin E) per 100 g of oil, together with plant sterols including campesterol, stigmasterol and brassicasterol (Chin et al., 2020).

The high proportion of monounsaturated oleic acid, combined with these antioxidants, gives moringa oil two properties that matter for formulation: skin compatibility, because oleic acid resembles lipids the skin already makes, and oxidative resilience, because the oil resists going rancid — a practical advantage in luxury products designed to perform consistently over time (Fernandes et al., 2024).

Evidence-based benefits for skin

Clinical and laboratory research points to several reliable effects.

Hydration and moisture retention

The most directly relevant clinical work on moringa seed oil was published in the journal Cosmetics in 2020. Researchers characterised the oil's composition, formulated it into an oil-in-water cream, and then assessed that cream in 32 participants, measuring skin hydration, erythema (redness), melanin values and skin visco-elasticity using non-invasive instrumentation (Chin et al., 2020).

The findings were clear:

  • The moringa seed oil cream significantly increased skin hydration compared with the cream base.

  • It reduced skin erythema, visible redness, over the course of the study.

  • It produced no skin irritation, confirming a favourable tolerance profile.

  • The oil itself demonstrated measurable antioxidant (free-radical scavenging) activity.

The authors concluded that the moringa seed oil cream enhanced skin hydration, possessed antioxidant activity, reduced erythema, and was safe to use — appropriate, in their words, for cosmetic and pharmaceutical application (Chin et al., 2020). Independent reviews of topical moringa reach the same broad conclusion: small human studies consistently show improvements in hydration and visible redness, with good tolerability (VitaLibrary, 2025).

Barrier support and soothing

Moringa oil's oleic and behenic acids help reinforce the skin's surface lipids, supporting softness and helping to slow moisture loss — behaving as both an emollient (softening) and a mild occlusive (moisture-sealing) agent (VitaLibrary, 2025). The oil's relevance to compromised or reactive skin has also drawn laboratory interest. In a study on cultured human sebocytes (cells of the sebaceous gland), moringa seed oil exhibited several desirable properties: a high level of anti-inflammatory oleic acid, a favourable omega balance, and inhibition of the secretion of pro-inflammatory signalling molecules (cytokines). The researchers characterised it as a promising ingredient for skincare (Georgiou et al., 2023).

Separately, the seed extract's behenic acid component has been shown in laboratory conditions to inhibit biofilm formation by Staphylococcus aureus (a bacterium associated with compromised and inflammation-prone skin), without simply killing the bacteria outright (Kang et al., 2025). This is early, in-vitro work, but it adds texture to moringa's long traditional reputation as a calming, protective oil.

Antioxidant protection

The combination of α-tocopherol, plant sterols and phenolic compounds gives moringa oil genuine antioxidant capacity, helping defend skin against the oxidative stress generated by environmental exposure (Chin et al., 2020; Nizioł-Łukaszewska et al., 2020). Antioxidant activity in the oil has been confirmed by standard laboratory assay, and it is one of the mechanisms by which the 2020 clinical cream is thought to have delivered its measured benefits (Chin et al., 2020).

Lightweight, elegant absorption

Despite its richness, moringa oil spreads easily and absorbs without a heavy residue — the behenic acid lending a satin rather than greasy finish (VitaLibrary, 2025). This is what makes it suitable for daily facial use across skin types, and particularly well suited to formulations where texture and wear matter as much as performance.

Why moringa oil belongs in luxury skincare

Luxury skincare demands ingredients that feel refined, perform consistently, and layer beautifully. Moringa oil meets all three tests.

It is nourishing without being crude, stable without heavy synthetic preservation, and it carries one of the more compelling evidence bases of any botanical oil — a rare thing, given how few plant oils have been tested on human skin at all. Its faint, clean scent blends harmoniously with the African essential oils and botanicals that run through the Epara range.
